How does citizenship by marriage or civil union work?

A foreign or stateless spouse of an Italian citizen may apply after 2 years of lawful residence in Italy from marriage, or 3 years from marriage when living abroad; the periods are halved when the couple has children. The marriage or civil union must remain valid without legal separation until the decree. The application is online and requires the applicable language level.
